La Leche League Updates 2022
Local La Leche League Groups provide support to breastfeeding or otherwise human milk feeding parents through monthly meetings and one-on-one support. La Leche League Leaders are volunteers who have personal breastfeeding experience with their own children and who have been accredited by La Leche League International.

Virtual Support is REAL support – Naomi Hambleton, Pronouns: she, her, hers; La Leche League Leader, Charleston, SC
When I found La Leche League in New York with my first child, I never thought I’d be a Leader of a Group but over the years I have loved being in this role. Leading in Pennsylvania, I have had “Dads Too and Meeting Two” evenings, I have held Cafe’ style events at libraries. I have been part of LLL playgroups in my current area and many fun events that really met a need and connected our community. This past year when COVID hit, I was so grateful that my co-Leaders and I didn’t skip a beat and went right to virtual ways to support our families.
I am a Leader in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. My co-Leaders are Bea, Kacy, Kat, Kimberly, and Tamsen. We already have a good Group with different locations each week of the month, the FIRST FRIDAY in one part of town for new mothers, the SECOND TUESDAY in another for parents and partners, and even the FOURTH SATURDAY for working families. When COVID shut down our ability to have in-person events, we decided to continue our usual scheduled day and time events but to move to virtual. We have tried ZOOM, Google Meets, and even Facebook Rooms for our Facebook Group which has over 4.6 thousand in it!!
We have found that that attendance has ebbed and flowed with highs and lows as the tides do here for us in the Lowcountry of South Carolina! We had challenges with connectivity, challenges with getting glitches and links to work, and lots of a learning curve for those of us who weren’t used to this style.
But we also have had so many great things that I want to share how proud I am of our Leaders! We all had to adjust our jobs, our families, and our homes for being physically distant while still trying to be social. My co-Leader Tamsen worked on getting us out a monthly flyer that I could post on Instagram and we could use to share with our community. My co-Leader Kimberly held scavenger hunts for the kids during her virtual meetings. She also did a “New Years Day Virtual Meeting/party with Hats and Disco lights”! Kat has worked hard to engage and meet parents on her Saturday meeting while also juggling her children. Bea and I have done our SECOND TUESDAY meeting backing up each other while Bea has deadlines for work at the same time and her little ones home too. My own kids continue to work in their rooms virtually as I set up my dining room with a La Leche League homemade poster hung on my wall for our events. Our co-Leader Kacy became a Leader and her very first meeting was held virtually!! I am really proud of and honored to work with my Charleston Leaders. These are women who love the community we volunteer in and we all really check-in and work as a team. Whether we had one parent or dozens join in, we held 48 meetings in 12 months!! I am proud that we volunteer to support our area and that collectively we were there for families each week as we have been when we were in person.
We have even had some wonderful outcomes. Many new parents who would not have been able to travel to meetings are attending our virtual events while in their PJs, while eating meals, while folding laundry, while double tasking work calls, and while parenting their little ones. And Leaders are doing the same on the other end as we remind our children to get on their virtual school classes too! Our in-person meetings usually had lower attendance on bad weather days. This year, if wifi is up and running, we have had nice chats on rainy days without parents having to leave their homes or bring their little ones out in the rain. I know that this year has been a challenge for us but I just want to acknowledge how much work and creativity my lovely group and I have done. We really have taken on this year and made it work for the better. We know that many of those who attend our meetings can be part of vulnerable populations and toddlers are not known for social distancing. I think some of us may even continue to do pop-up Lives on our social media or virtual events as we start to consider when we can find safer ways to also meet in real life out of doors or with masks or in larger spaces.

Series Meetings
Breastfeeding families need good information and encouragement. In this day and age, breastfeeding can be a lonely experience, or it can become the most profound thing you'll ever do - you decide! Our meetings provide a casual place where you and your baby are welcome. Practical help and up-to-date information are shared, and friendships are often formed. If you are considering breastfeeding or already breastfeeding, La Leche League welcomes you, your nursing baby and your young children to our monthly meetings.
La Leche League meetings cover a rotating series of four topics. Though meeting titles may vary, these topics and examples include:
1. ADVANTAGES OF BREASTFEEDING/CHESTFEEDING & HUMAN MILK
What makes human milk the perfect infant food?
How does nursing provide "health insurance" for baby?
What are the advantages to the nursing parent? fathers/partners? other family members?
2. ADJUSTING TO LIFE WITH A NEW BABY
How does baby get started breastfeeding?
How often and how long should baby nurse?
What is partner's role? other children? grandparents?
How do meals and housework get done with a new baby?
Is it possible to breastfeed and return to work?
3. OVERCOMING DIFFICULTIES & CHALLENGES
What can be done if milk supply gets low?
What if baby seems fussy all the time?
How do other parents handle night time waking?
Can sore nipples be helped? or prevented?
4. NUTRITION, STARTING SOLIDS & WEANING
When and how should baby start solid foods?
What are the best foods to feed a baby? a toddler?
How can family eating habits be improved?
When and how do you wean?
Enrichment Meetings
Our Leaders work to serve the needs of their local communities and the interests of their members. Groups may have special meetings for mothers with nursing toddlers or meetings where dads are welcome that coincide with Series Meetings, or they may hold Enrichment Meetings on special topics. Additionally, our Areas hold periodic Community Education Workshops to give families an opportunity to connect and expand their breastfeeding knowledge. Each meeting is unique - watch your our pages for special events near you!

We are teaming up with Mellow and Play Cafe this year for our annual celebration of World Breastfeeding Week and National Breastfeeding Month! Bring the whole family and join us anytime from 3pm-7pm for fun, breastfeeding and community info, swag bags and a raffle! Mellow and Play Cafe is graciously offering a discount for the kids to play on their inflatible fun! Each child is only $5 when you tell them you are there supporting Live, Love, Latch and La Leche League! (You can stop by for info and swag bags for free. Charge is just for kids playing in the play area.) Raffle tickets will be sold on site and items will be posted here as we get them in! All money from raffle sales will go to LLL of Charleston and LLL of Summerville. More info to come! Please share this event with your friends and family!
Live, Love, Latch! events are designed to not only celebrate breastfeeding, but to also highlight community support. All in attendance at a Live, Love, Latch! event will be counted as participants, who declare their support of breastfeeding in their local community and beyond.
Also, as an added goal, we will aim to break the previous year's record for number of breastfeeding supporters who came out in a show of support. Any one who attends will be counted - whether breastfeeding or not.
This celebration provides an opportunity to educate family, friends, healthcare providers and other community members about how they can support breastfeeding, and also emphasizes the value of the support network behind every nursing dyad.

A La Leche League Leader is a mother who has had a specific type of breastfeeding and parenting experience, meets the prerequisites for Leadership, completed specific reading and introspection and has finished the extensive written training curriculum established by LLLI.

We have free and relaxed circle gatherings. Come to be supported or share support. Our philosophy is based on parents helping
one another. Starting with good information
and making our own choices that work best for our families.
Our motto is “take what works and leave the rest”.
Babies and children are always welcome. Volunteer Leaders are trained and accredited.
