Reasons to Wean? Or not?

As La Leche League Leaders we are often called or emailed when a mother has questions or concerns about weaning. We are hoping to discuss some of them at our Mt. Pleasant meeting this morning.

Here are a few of the most common ones.

Sometimes the mother and nursling will decide it is indeed time to wean. Other times the mother will find strategies or information to help her continue nursing her nursling and meet her breastfeeding goals.

• I have to have a medical procedure such as an MRI, X-ray, CAT scan, ultrasound, mammogram.

• I need to take a radioactive drink for a test in the hospital.

• My baby is sick and requires hospitalization.

• I need to be hospitalized due to an illness.

• I resent nursing all the time and want my body back!

• I want my child to eat more. The doctor advises that we wean to improve appetite.

• I need to get my baby on more of a schedule and nursing isn’t working into our schedule.

• The baby has a rash or colic and I think is allergic to my milk or something in my milk.

• I need to lose/gain weight or I am losing/gaining weight. I want to begin an exercise program or diet plan.

• I want to be able to have a drink of alcohol with dinner and to go out with friends and drink.

• I am getting a lot of pressure about weaning from my close relatives/friends/neighbors.

• I have a business or vacation trip planned in the near future.

• The dentist tells me that I must wean because nursing is causing cavities.

• My child is xyz weeks/months/years old so I think it is time to wean.

• I am having a surgical procedure or other medical procedure that requires anesthesia.

• I am going back to work or school soon and can’t or don’t want to pump while at work or school.

• My partner is jealous of nursing time and wants to spend more time with me.

• I am anxious about nursing in public at this age and the reaction of strangers.

• I need to take a medication so the doctor said I need to wean.

• My toddler is starting a new daycare/my child is starting preschool.

• My baby is teething, has teeth or has bitten or I am afraid will bite me!

• My pediatrician/friend/mother says I need to start solids because the baby weighs xyz.

• My friends who have babies have weaned by now. My sister weaned her children by this age. My mom or mother-in-law weaned her children by this age.

• My 6-9 month baby keeps getting distracted and seems to be self weaning.

• I feel like a human pacifier! I feel touched out.

• The baby suddenly refuses to nurse. Is this a nursing strike or is it time to wean?

• Nursing is taking up a lot of time in my life. I can’t get things done that I need to do.

• Nursing is not going well! I am in pain, I have mastitis/thrush/blisters/etc.

• I am trying to get pregnant and am concerned that I won’t have fertility.

• I am pregnant and am not sure if I should wean.

• What does “don’t offer, don’t refuse” mean? When can I start this?

• My child is a mamma’s boy/clingy girl, too shy.

• I am exhausted and need to sleep. Should I night wean or just stop nursing?

• I feel guilty that I enjoy nursing too much.

• I have to start a chemotherapy in the near future.

How do you know your newborn is doing well?

Excerpt from THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING 8th Edition

Chapter Six: The First Two Weeks: Milk!

Pg 110: How to Know Your Baby’s Doing Well

• Weight gain. Look for a return to birth weight by two weeks. An average gain after that is roughly 1 ounce (30 g) a day, but your baby may gain somewhat more or less.

• Diapers. Look for at least three “okay” (thumb and forefinger circle size) diapers each day during the first month or so.

• Your breasts. Look for comfortable nipples, a milk release within a minute (usually much sooner), and noticeable softening by the end of most nursings.

• Nursing behavior. Look for open eyes when the feed starts, periods of slow (about one per second) sucks with periodic pauses, and finishing within a half hour at most feeds.

• Disposition between nursings. Look for the baby falling gently asleep toward the end of the nursing (or contentment for at least a while before he nurses again), limp hands, and an unworried expression most of the time.

• What doesn’t matter. How many minutes on each breast, whether he falls asleep at the breast at the end of the feeding, or whether he nurses long enough to “get to the hindmilk.”

Books for New Moms & Dads

We had a super great meeting today in Mount Pleasant and we talked a lot about books. We believe that moms know their babies best and they really just need to trust their baby.

We often say "watch the baby, not the clock" and similar expressions because we really believe if you watch your baby, he or she will give you the answer more than any book. But we do have ones that we really feel help mothers and fathers to find their way to trust themselves.

Information is power for you to make the best choices for your family.
Here are a few of our favorites!!

Naomi Stadlen has written a gem of a book for all new moms entitled "What Mothers Do: Especially When It Looks Like Nothing." Get ready for some tears and feeling that she legitimizes what we do all day. It is more than you give yourself credit for. This is a must read for all new moms!

Kathy Kendall-Tackett has written two wonderful books that many new moms will find helpful at some time or another: “The Hidden Feelings of Motherhood” and “Depression in New Mothers.” If you are feeling more that just those few weepy days of baby blues don't hesitate to please pick one of these up and give us and your health care practitioner a call.

"The Breastfeeding Cafe: Mothers Share the Joys, Challenges, and Secrets of Nursing" by Barbara L. Behrmann is filled with stories from moms in their own words about their feelings about breastfeeding and mothering...from love, to ambivalence, to dislike. You will feel like you are at a meeting like ours reading it.

Most of our moms have heard of William and Martha Sears. They have so many books..."The Baby Book", "The Baby Sleep Book", "The Breastfeeding Book" and many more. One thing that many moms like about these books is the encouragement to follow your heart and not always follow their books. You may find you like bits and pieces of their ideas and you may find you've heard many of them at an LLL meeting before!

I can't forget to mention "Womanly Art of Breastfeeding New 8th Edition" By LLLI. This new edition is wonderful, warm, up-to-date, modern info for today's mom. You will love it. We feel it is a meeting in a book!

All new families go through that sleep deprivation stage. It is a badge to be proudly warn! Yet we all need to take care of ourselves too. Here is the book we talked about today. It is entitled "The No-Cry Sleep Solution: Gentle Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night" and it is by Elizabeth Pantley. She gives lots of research based information for those of us who just feel letting a baby cry themselves to sleep is wrong but just don't know what else to do. She is gentle and non-judgmental and has a ton of ideas. Some may work for your sleepy family.

Here are a few great ones for new dads too:

While on a Sears kick, I'll add a couple for the dads. One popular one in the LLL circle is "Becoming a Father: How to Nurture and Enjoy Your Family". My favorite for dads that I buy for gifts for family and friends is "Father's First Steps: 25 Things Every New Dad Should Know" by William and Martha's sons James Sears and Robert Sears. It is a great little book that is fun and quick to read. My husband even read it and liked it!

Leave the book by your bed or next to one of the chairs you nurse in or pump in and read a chapter at a time or a page at a time. Happy reading!

Pool party will be rescheduled

Due to severe thunderstorms tonight we are going to go ahead and cancel the pool party. We will post a rain date ASAP.

Mt P meeting & Tonight's Pool Party.

We had such a great turn out today for the Mt P meeting! It was great to see so many new babies and so many toddlers in the room. What fun.

The library has an event in September when we usually have our meeting so we will either be changing the day/time or location. Please check back in about a week and we'll post more about this.

Also, an FYI about tonight's pool party...keep your ears and eyes on the sky. It looks like it is storming now in places near the party. If it passes, we will be there but we many cancel if the weather keeps grumbling or it is pouring. Thanks for understanding.

Ten Things Not to Say to a New Breastfeeding Mother

This is from THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING 8th Edition, Chapter Two entitled "Building Your Network"...

1. Is he eating again?

2. He's just using you for a pacifier.

3. Here, I'll feed the baby a bottle and you can go get some housework done.

4. Maybe your milk isn't good enough.

5. We've never made enough milk in our family.

6. Can breasts that size really make enough milk?

7. If you're going back to work, shouldn't he get used to having some of his feedings from other people?

8. You look like a cow attached to that pump.

9. I feel like your breasts really belong to me, not the baby.

10. Don't let him fall asleep at the breast - he'll get into bad sleep habits.

Thinking About Leadership or Volunteering with LLL?

Hi Moms!!

We are excited to invite you to a special meeting for moms interested in volunteering or becoming Leaders with La Leche League.

If you feel that La Leche League philosophy is something you believe in and you've breastfed (or are planning on continuing to breastfeed) for at least one year, then becoming a La Leche League Leader may be something for you!

No pressure... come and ask questions and find out if it may interest you.

Of course, as in all things LLL babies and young children welcome.

If you are interested in joining us, please check out this link.
http://www.llli.org/LAD/TaLLL/TaLLL.html

Please join us on Friday January 22nd at 10:15 am at the Mt Pleasant Branch Library 1133 Mathis Ferry Road.

LLL philosophy is summarized in the following ten concepts:

* Mothering through breastfeeding is the most natural and effective way of understanding and satisfying the needs of the baby.
* Mother and baby need to be together early and often to establish a satisfying relationship and an adequate milk supply.
* In the early years, the baby has an intense need to be with his mother which is as basic as his need for food.
* Breast milk is the superior infant food.
* For the healthy, full-term baby, breast milk is the only food necessary until baby shows signs of needing solids, about the middle of the first year after birth.
* Ideally, the breastfeeding relationship will continue until the baby outgrows the need.
* Alert and active participation by the mother in childbirth is a help in getting breastfeeding off to a good start.
* Breastfeeding is enhanced and the nursing couple sustained by the loving support, help, and companionship of the baby’s father. A father’s unique relationship with his baby is an important element in the child’s development from early infancy.
* Good nutrition means eating a well-balanced and varied diet of foods in as close to their natural state as possible.
* From infancy on, children need loving guidance which reflects acceptance of their capabilities and sensitivity to their feelings.

We hope to see you there!
